Sharps, in gambling terms, are the professionals in the gambling industry.  Rarely do the sharps fall on the "fun" bets like betting on the favorites or betting on the over total.  The sharps usually go against public popular line-- taking advantage of inflated lines and mismatched numbers due to a large percentage of public bets on a certain play.

The easiest spots to find sharp plays are in nationally televised games, primetime games, and big games between popular teams with, teams with star players and rivals that get a lot of air time during the week on sports media.

It is important that you do your own homework and look at trends, as well.  Simply going contrarian against the popular public bet won't always be profitable.  Find the games that work best for your bet and your budget.  Pay attention to sharp trends-- you rarely want to be on the wrong side of the pros.

Let's take a look at where some of the PROS are laying their money tonight:

5:40 p.m. CST: Milwaukee Brewers (86-70) at Cincinnati Reds (73-83)

The Brewers have been baseball's hottest team over the past two plus weeks, winning 15 of their last 17 games to leapfrog the Cubs and claim the 2nd NL Wild Card spot behind the Nats.  Sonny Gray (11-7, 2.80 ERA) is on the mound for the Reds versus the Brewers' Adrian Houser (6-7, 3.83 ERA).  The Reds opened as short -135 home favorites and the Brewers a +125 dog. Sharps are riding the red hot Brewers and quickly pounded Milwaukee down to +115 (Cincinnati -135 to -125). The total opened at 8.5 with even -110 juice on both sides and the juice has moved toward the under at 8.5 under -115, signaling slight liability to the under.

5:40 p.m. CST: Philadelphia Phillies (79-76) at Washington Nationals (86-69)

The two teams play a day-night doubleheader today and sharps are eyeing the Nats in Game 2. Aaron Nola (12-6, 3.75) faces Max Scherzer (10-7, 2.81 ERA) in a stellar pitchers' duel. Washington opened as -165 home favorites and have shot up to -178 behind heavy smart money (Phillies +152 to +163). The total hasn't budged off the opener of 8.

6:10 p.m. CST: Baltimore Orioles (51-106) at Toronto Blue Jays (64-93)

Anthony Kay (1-0, 5.79 ERA) starts for the Jays tonight while Dylan Bundy (6-14, 4.89 ERA) goes the Orioles. Toronto opened as a -145 favorites and Baltimore a +125. Wiseguys have been hammering the Orioles in a sneaky bounce-back spot, dropping Baltimore to +115 (Toronto -145 to -126). Aside from sharp reverse line movement, the Orioles also have value as a divisional dog with a high total. Sharps see another high-scoring game as they've pushed the total up from 9.5 to 10.
