High schools across Iowa no longer have to limit the number of spectators at basketball games, wrestling meets and other sporting events.

On Thursday, Gov. Kim Reynolds modified her public health emergency proclamation designed to reduce the spread of COVID-19. With the update, she lifted the restriction that only people who lived in a participant's household could attend extracurricular activities or recreational gatherings.

The modified proclamation went into effect Friday. However, athletic conferences and school districts can still enforce stricter limits or keep fans from attending events.

The Governor's proclamation continues to require people to wear masks when they are in an indoor public space and unable to social distance for 15 minutes or longer.

While lifting the spectator limits, Reynolds extended other public health measures through Feb, 6.
