Schools Closed In Iowa For Remainder Of School Year

Governor Kim Reynolds announced today that students in the state will not return to school for the remainder of the year.

In a press conference on Friday, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that all schools in Iowa will be closed for the remainder of the year. On March 15th, schools in Iowa were closed across the state and that closure continued from April 2nd until today.

This announcement means that at 327 public school districts and 179 nonpublic school districts will not reopen for the remainder of the year.

All spring sports for Iowa schools are officially canceled as well. She will evaluate the status of summer sports on June 1st.

Reynolds also is waiving the late August start date so school districts can make local decisions about the 2020-2021 academic year. As the COVID-19 rates decline, Governor Reynolds indicated some schools may begin the fall semester earlier than August 23 but the exact date will be determined on a county by county basis. The original start date for the 2020-2021 academic year was August 23rd.

Gov. Reynolds said that school districts will be required to provide continuous education for the year.
