Marlins’ First Game Without Jose Fernandez Was a Total Tearjerker
Dee Gordon's dramatic leadoff home run was only one of many emotional moments Monday as the Miami Marlins played their first game after the death of Jose Fernandez.
The Marlins, still in shock after Fernandez's shocking death on Sunday, tried to begin putting the pieces back together by taking the field against the Mets in a game Miami would up winning, 7-3. Every player wore Fernandez's name and number 16 on his jersey.
The game itself featured a clearly emotional Gordon leading off with a home run.
After the game, Gordon talked about the difficulty of taking the field.
There was a moment of silence in honor of Fernandez before the game and afterward the team gathered around the mound in a moving tribute and then came back again later.
Several of Fernandez's teammates, as well as manager Don Mattingly, also expressed their gratitude after such a raw night.
