Illinois Is Officially The First State To Cover EpiPens For Kids

If you or someone you know has diabetes, then you know exactly how much insulin costs. It's genuinely surprising how high it is, considering people literally need it to survive. According to WQAD, "in 2009, a pair of EpiPen injectors went for $100, but by 2016, the price had jumped to $600."

And yet, it's rare to see EpiPens covered under company insurance policies.

But that might be changing. As of today, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed a law that would require insurance companies to cover costs for kids needing EpiPen injections for cases of severe allergic reactions.

This makes Illinois the very first state to require this coverage by law, and it will likely impact a LOT of lives. Of course, there are upsides and downsides to this.

The bill won't go into effect until January 1, 2020, and won't cover anyone over the age of 18. But it's a step in the right direction, and hopefully more states will follow suit!
