The Rock Island Arsenal has to be one of the most unique places in America. The location, purpose, architecture and history of the Arsenal are each rare in their own way, but combined they make the island one-of-a-kind.

It is said that the architecture and amenities of the island exist because the first commander stationed at the Arsenal hated being there, and decided if he was going to be stuck there, he was going to make it tolerable.

One of the unique amenities of the Arsenal is its golf course. At 120 years old, it is one of the oldest courses in America, but its future is now in peril.

When the course first became open to the general public in 2007, usage soared, but now usage if off due to a variety of issues including security checks to get on the island.

Now that conditions on the course itself have been improved dramatically, it would be a shame to see such a rare gem in the Quad Cities close.

The next time you think of hitting the links, give the history, challenge, and uniqueness of the Arsenal Golf Course a try.
